Oct 21 was the 200th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar, at which my illustrious almost-ancestor, Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, defeated a superior force of French and Spanish ships off Cape Trafalgar, at the western end of the Straits of Gibraltar. He died at the height of the battle, from a bullet fired from the mizzen top of the "Redoubtable", which lodged in his spine. The Redoubtable was entangled by the rigging with the Victory, Nelson's ship.
He is my almost-ancestor because his brother, Reverend Willam Nelson, First Earl Nelson, was my great-great-great-great-grandfather. Here is a link to a relevant web site with a portrait bearing a striking resemblance to my mother and her mother.

C - Yes, it's nice to know these things, and many early kings of England and France are direct ancestors, too, as far as I can discover. Mary Boleyn, Anne Boleyn's sister and one-time mistress of Henry VIII, is my 12th great-grandmother, through Rev. Nelson's mother Catherine Suckling; Mary Boleyn, being the great-granddaughter of the first Duke of Norfolk (John Howard), has the early Plantagenet and Norman kings and much of the early French royal families (Capet) for her ancestors.
ReplyDeleteActually, very many present day English or French persons have these early Kings as ancestors. It's nothing exceptional, but I find it interesting.
